Sesame Street Old School: Volume 3 DVD Review

SESAME STREET OLD SCHOOL: VOLUME 3
Available wherever DVDs are sold and on Amazon.com

Ryan Dosier - Two of the best DVD sets released by Sesame Workshop in the last decade were Volumes 1 and 2 of the excellent Old School series, which showcased clips and episodes from Sesame Street's early, pre-Elmo days. Realeased in 2006, Volume 1 spanned 1969-1974 and Volume 2 picked up with 1974-1979 when it was released in 2007. These sets contained extremely rare footage from the golden age of Sesame Street, and fans have been clamoring for a third volume to be released for five years. After awhile, and the release of the 40 Years of Sunny Days DVD set in 2009 and the Best of Sesame Street Spoofs set last year, fans assumed that Sesame Workshop had given up on the Old School sets, and so we gave up on them as well.

But then, less than two months ago, it was revealed that Old School: Volume 3 would finally be released by Sesame Workshop and Warner Bros. Home Video five years after the last release. This was hugely exciting news for Muppet fans and fans of Sesame Street's sunniest days. It was announced that the set would continue on the trend of the first two volumes and pick up with 1979-1984. Does the set hold up to its two predecessors? Read on to find out! (Spoiler: It absolutely does.)

The first thing most fans will notice about this set is that it contains only two DVDs, as opposed to the previous two volumes' three discs. This does mean less content, but honestly I didn't feel at all shafted while I was going through the set. I thought that everything included was wonderful and carefully and purposefully chosen to truly represent this era of Sesame Street.

Once again, there are five full episodes of the show in this set, the season premieres of Seasons 11-15. In the past I thought it would have been better to go through the entire season and pick an episode that was perhaps more interesting than the season premiere, but on Volume 3 I think each season premiere is excellent and the perfect choice for the set. For Season 11 we get to see the whole cast travel to Puerto Rico for Maria's birthday, in Season 12 Big Bird goes to school for a day, in Season 13 birdwatchers (hilarious humans portrayed by Madeline Kahn and Richard Hunt--yes, that Richard Hunt) watch Big Bird, in Season 14 Big Bird sets out for summer camp, and in Season 15 Gordon and Snuffy run the New York City Marathon.

On both discs there are also the traditional crop of "Classic Cuts"--some wonderful, favorite clips and songs that aren't featured in the episodes included. These Classic Cuts include often-seen favorites like "Born to Add," "Dance Myself to Sleep," and "Grover the Singing Waiter," as well as some true rarities like Big Bird and R2-D2's song "I Say Banana," Oscar and Bruno performing "Trash Outta Heaven," and an appearance by Aristotle, a rarely seen blind monster Muppet performed by Richard Hunt. Although there are fewer Classic Cuts included on Volume 3 than there were on Volumes 1 or 2, it's understandable because Volume 3 is only two discs. I attribute this to wanting to keep cost down on the set in an effort to sell more DVDs... but it is a shame that we didn't get more clips from the amazing era of Sesame Street in the early 1980s. For instance, there is very little Count von Count, virtually no Super Grover, and shockingly very little Cookie Monster.

But the content that is here is absolutely fantastic. There is so much Big Bird, which is always welcome. We also get plenty of Snuffy, lots of Telly Monster, tons of Bob and Maria and Susan and all the adults, and just pure Sesame Street greatness. My favorite of the full episodes included has to be the trip to Puerto Rico. It just seems so effortless and fun--like you really are on a vacation with Maria and Olivia. Plus, the hilarity of Maria's near-misses of seeing the rest of the cast who are there to surprise her for her birthday are hysterical. It's especially funny when she sees Big Bird and then looks back and sees a chicken instead. It's ridiculous, but it's Sesame Street, so it's impossible not to love it.

The bonus features on the set are one of the big draws, and with good reason. The best feature included is audio commentary from Sonia Manzanno (Maria) on Episode 1316, where the cast goes to Puerto Rico. The insights are great, but what's so much fun is hearing how much fun Sonia is having watching this classic show again. She laughs at the jokes, she cheers the actors and Muppeteers, and she just adds so much to the experience. I would be thrilled to see audio commentary on each of the episodes included on the next set. Perhaps from Caroll Spinney or Bob McGrath or Roscoe Orman. But honestly, having Sonia's commentary was such a wonderful treat.

The other bonus features are some (way too) short behind the scenes clips of a Nobel Price segment, the Birdwatchers with Madeline Kahn and Big Bird, Grover the Singing Waiter, and the "Exercise" song. These are wonderful clips, but they are just so incredibly short that it just leaves you itching for more. We also get to hear (and see, if you choose picture-in-picture mode) Caroll Spinney reading How To Be a Grouch, a book he wrote and illustrated himself, as Oscar the Grouch. This is also a really fun feature, especially watching Caroll record as Oscar. There is also an exclusive, 13-minute interview with Caroll Spinney that is delightful but nothing too revolutionary. Finally, the set includes clips from the "Goodbye Mr. Hooper" episode. Having these clips is spectacular because they include almost all of the Street Scene clips with Big Bird and the adults, not just the main scene that everyone has seen dozens of times. It's a wonderful tribute to include these clips on the set.

Old School: Volume 3 also comes with a 24-page booklet filled with trivia, interviews, and, best of all, pages of written tributes to Will Lee (Mr. Hooper) from the human cast and some of the Muppeteers, including Jerry Nelson and Fran Brill. The booklet is a fantastic supplement to an already fantastic set.

In the end, there are really no reasons not to buy Sesame Street Old School: Volume 3. For only $20 you get two DVDs packed with spectacular content from the best years of Sesame Street. You get Jerry Nelson, Frank Oz, Richard Hunt, Jim Henson, Caroll Spinney, Big Bird, Bert, Ernie, Telly Monster, Oscar, Grover, and so, so much more. Yes, the set doesn't include as much as the previous two volumes, but it is still such a great collection of content that it's hard to be upset. Plus, with bonus features to delight and surprise, there really is no reason not to spend $20 on Old School: Volume 3.

NEWS UPDATE: September 6, 2012

Yesterday afternoon, Miss Piggy revealed via the Muppets Studio's official Twitter account, that she was starting her own official Twitter account @RealMissPiggy! So far, the divine Miss P. has racked up over 4,000 followers in less than 24 hours. Most of her tweets so far have been about her appearance at Fashion's Night Out in New York City tonight. Miss Piggy appeared at FNO last year as well and made a huge splash, so one has to assume her splash tonight will be just as great. Piggy has tweeted the following three pictures as she gets ready for tonight's events, but keep checking her Twitter feed for more that will surely be coming!
The entire series of the classic Dinosaurs is now available for streaming on Netflix! All four seasons of the hilarious prehistoric comedy from The Jim Henson Company and Disney can now be watched anytime you want if you have Netflix, which is awesome. Currently all of Fraggle Rock is available for streaming on Netflix as well, so it's encouraging to see more and more Henson projects make their way to instant streaming. Maybe one day we'll see The Muppet Show on Netflix as well!

Hugely exciting news came yesterday as Warner Home Video announced the long-anticipated release date for Sesame Street: Old School, Volume 3 (1979-1984) DVDs on November 6th! Since Old School, Volume 2 was released way back in 2007, this release is long overdue and highly exciting. Here's the official description from Warner Home Video via TVShowsonDVD.com: Back by popular demand, it's our third installment in the Old School series, covering 1979-1984. In this set you'll see your Sesame Street friends on and off the Street! Remember when everyone surprised Maria in Puerto Rico for her birthday? Or when Snuffy and Gordon ran the New York City marathon? Bonus DVD extras like never-before-seen behind-the-scenes footage will prove that we're still kicking it old school! Although no cover art or bonus feature lists have been released yet, I've been told by a few insiders that the features coming for this DVD set are spectacular and sure to make it a must-own!

One of our favorite people, artist and friend of The Muppet Mindset Dave Hulteen, Jr., has completed an incredible piece of artwork paying tribute to Jerry Nelson. The art features Jerry being greeted by Jerry Juhl, Richard Hunt, and Jim Henson. Thanks, Dave, for the wonderful piece. Click it to make it bigger!

News Update: July 14, 2011

NEWS UPDATE: July 14, 2011

Earlier this week, we linked to two preview songs from the upcoming Muppets: The Green Album which features Muppet songs covered by some of music's most popular and talented artists. The songs we linked to were "The Muppet Show Theme" by OK Go and "Halfway Down the Stairs" by Amy Lee... both of which have been removed unceremoniously for copyright reasons. Well, fear not, Muppet fans, because Spin.com has an exclusive listen to "Our World" (from Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas) as performed by My  Morning Jacket. I love it--a lot. Give it a listen and judge for yourself!

Speaking of The Green Album, Disney has launched a new website called MuppetsMusic.com (http://www.muppetsmusic.com/) to promote the release of both The Green Album and the soundtrack for The Muppets (which the website reveals is to hit stores on November 22--the day before the film is released in US theaters). On this new site you can purchase one of two exclusive combo packs which include The Green Album, an exclusive poster, and a t-shirt featuring the winning design from the Threadless contest. The combo pack that includes the physical CD of The Green Album costs $40, while the one that includes a digital download of the album is $35.

It's impossible to argue that SesameStreet.org isn't the best of the best when it comes to official websites for Muppet characters. Disney's Muppets.com, for instance, pales in comparison when you see the countless video clips and interactivity options presented to you on Sesame Workshop's crowning achievement. Well, this wonderful site has gotten even better thanks to an updated page on the Sesame Street Muppets. This page features links to numerous "profile pages" for numerous Sesame favorites. This includes classic, hugely popular characters like Big Bird, Elmo, and Cookie Monster but shockingly and wonderfully includes pages for practically unknown or retired such as Little Chrissie, Ovejita, Little Murray Sparkles, Clementine, Fluffy, and Big Jeffy. It's crazy, it's awesome--therefore, crazy awesome--check it out!

The iTunes Store has been erupting with great new--and old--Sesame Street content over the past week. There's a new iPod Touch and iPhone app called, simply "iYip" starring the Yip-Yip Martians as performed by Matt Vogel and David Rudman. The app lets you hear the Martians spout words and phrases such as "You Betcha," "Booya," and, my favorite, "Awesome." You can also set yourself an alarm clock and be woken up by the Martians random words. It's awesome and well worth the $1.99 price tag just for the fun of it.

But the most exciting iTunes release for Sesame Street this week was the incredible Sesame Street Classics, Vol. 1 which, for $17.99 gives you twelve full, hour-long episodes of Sesame Street from Seasons 1 to 20 and, when purchasing the full season, a "Behind the Street" segment and, free to everyone, a Sesame Flashback retrospective. The fact that it is listed as Vol. 1 makes it seem that we'll see even more classic Sesame Street coming to iTunes very soon... so buy it if you can to encourage the release of even more--and because it's absolutely awesome. Trust me.

Sesame Street Saturdays: Sesame Street Old School Vol. 1 CD Set

Sesame Street Old School Vol. 1
Classic 3-CD Set Review

Ryan Dosier - A few weeks ago, Sesame Workshop re-released three classic Sesame Street records in CD format in one convenient set. The set is "Sesame Street Old School Vol. 1" (yes, the same name as the DVD set) and contains the albums, "The Sesame Street Record," "Big Bird Sings," and "Bert & Ernie Sing-Along."

AUDIO
Each CD truly sounds better than the next and all three of them sound absolutely fantastic. It's so intriguing to listen to the vintage 70's goodness of "The Sesame Street Record" and hear the familiar voices of Caroll Spinney and Bob McGrath that fans can still hear today. All of the audio is truly as crisp and clear as if the songs were recorded yesterday.

True, there are some songs on these CDs that have been released countless times ("Rubber Duckie," "Bein' Green," "ABC-DEF-GHI") but even these seem to have a new flourish in the digital restoration. It's amazing what they can do in this digital age. But, don't worry, when Ernie tells you to turn over the record, you'll still wish you could.

PRESENTATION
The presentation of these CDs is fantastic. All of them come in individual sleeves that beautifully mimic an old record, complete with track and cast listing on the back. The real treat comes when you pull them out of the sleeves, however, and you see that each of the CDs even looks like a record. It's a wonderful touch and is a lot of fun.

Something fun and interesting I noticed on the CDs is who sings each track. For instance, on "I've Got Two," a song performed by Gordon, Susan, Bob, Oscar, Big Bird, and Mr. Hooper, the CD says, "Big Bird, Oscar plus everybody including Mr. Hooper." It's not terribly interesting but I think it's absolutely charming for no reason in particular.

FUN FACTOR
Is there anything more fun for a Muppet fan than classic Sesame Street? It's just the best, and these CDs are no different. It's just a joy to sit back and listen to Gordon and Big Bird and everybody talk to you as if they're with you or sing you a song as if you're learning the alphabet for the first time.

But the most fun obviously comes from the unhinged lunacy of "Bert & Ernie Sing-Along." The entire album takes place in Bert and Ernie's bathroom while Bert is in the tub (yes... IN the tub). And it's not just Bert and Ernie singing along, but Gordon, Susan, Bob, David, Luis, Maria, Big Bird, Grover, Herry, Cookie Monster, Prairie Dawn, The Count, Oscar, and Mr. Hooper all join in he fun as well. It's hilarious, heartwarming, and a whole lot of fun. Now... could someone please get poor Bert a towel?

CONCLUSION
This CD set was one of the greatest purchases I've made so far in 2010. I had never had the opportunity to hear the fun of "Bert & Ernie Sing-Along" or the magic of listening to "The Sesame Street Record" straight through.

I really can't recommend this set enough. Whether you're an old-school fan who grew up owning these records or if you're a teenage fan like myself who has never heard them--or even if you're a parent who wants to share classic Sesame Street with your own kids... this set is for you!

This set is available from Amazon for only $17.99.
