Floyd Pepper, Animal, Walter, Janice, Uncle Deadly, Zoot, Lips, Gaffer, Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, Beaker, Waldorf, Statler, the Koozebanians, Rizzo the Rat, the Swedish Chef, Camilla the Chicken, the Java Muppets, Droop, the Great Gonzo, Crazy Harry, Marvin Suggs, the Muppaphones, Thog, Sweetums, Robin the Frog, Beauregard, Sam Eagle, Scooter, Pepe the Prawn, Pops, Rowlf the Dog and a couple of androgynous penguins) as they celebrate The Muppet Show's original syndicated bow in the 1976 fall television season.
The success of last year's Threadless Tee contest led me to create an all-new composition in the same spirit as the "Muppetational Mosaic." The "Celebrational Theatre" began as a partial nod to the classic Struzan movie posters of the 70's and 80's. My work is a very far cry from his brilliance yet the movie marquee concept evolved into this effort to mark a milestone in Muppet history.
I referenced many of the Muppet Theatre incarnations over the past 35 years, including comic book sketches, glimpses from television specials like The Muppets Go to the Movies, It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie and the redressed El Capitan Theater depicted in last year's The Muppets. The famed Henson Townhouse and Muppets Tonight's K-MUP building have also influenced the d├ęcor and the inclusion of an electronic spire.
Many puppets and classic graphics of the 70's were researched in order to achieve a vintage Muppet Show esthetic. Every character, ornamental curl and typographic logo was hand drawn on my Cintiq tablet and drafted into clean, 8-color vector shapes in Adobe Illustrator. This numbered and hand-signed print is the result of over 100 hours of work from a lifelong Muppet fan. I hope it honors the rich history of Jim Henson's Muppets that inspired me to become an artist.
